People who use Sejda generally speak well of it, and they are right to. But the reason they go looking for an alternative is almost always the same: three tasks an hour. With one document it does not matter. Working through ten invoices, you stop at the third and wait for the clock.
Where exactly does Sejda's free tier stop?
- 3 tasks per hour. The fourth one waits.
- Page limits per tool: 50 pages for organising pages, 200 for most other tools.
- File size: 50 MB for most tools, 100 MB for compression.
- No signup required — which is genuinely a point in its favour.
On the paid side there is a $5 week pass, $7.50 per user per month, or $63 a year including the desktop version. Paid removes the hourly and page limits and raises the file size to 500 MB.
What Sejda genuinely does well
Let us be fair, because these are not small things:
- One of the few online tools that can really edit the text inside a PDF.
- There is a desktop version, for people who want to work offline.
- The week pass: for a one-off job you can pay $5 for seven days without starting a subscription. We have no equivalent.
- Free use needs no account.
If you do a heavy PDF job a few times a year, the week pass is probably the most sensible option — you never start a monthly subscription.
Why an hourly cap grates
Because that is not how the work happens. Nobody spreads document processing across an afternoon; they want to clear twenty files in one sitting. An hourly meter reflects the shape of the billing, not the shape of the need.
This is not a flaw peculiar to Sejda. Anything that runs on a server costs money to run and has to be capped somewhere. The limit is unavoidable — the question worth asking is whether the work needed a server at all.
Page operations do not need a server
Merging, splitting, rotating, cropping, deleting and reordering pages can all be done with your browser's own power. When they are, two things change at once: nothing is uploaded, so the privacy question disappears; and nothing costs the provider anything, so there is nothing to meter.
On PDF Platform those tools run in the browser: no hourly cap, no daily cap, no account. Up to 80 MB per file.
Checking takes thirty seconds: open the merge tool, disconnect from the internet, run the merge. If it completes, the work is happening on your machine — there is no server job to count.
And the work that does need a server?
Here honesty is required: conversion to Word, OCR and compression run on a server here too, and the free plan comes with a daily allowance. On those tools we are limited as well.
The difference is where the limit falls. Sejda's hourly cap covers every tool, page editing included. Here, page operations are never counted, because they cost us nothing — and those are exactly the things free users do most.

- Doing page operations (merge, split, rotate, delete, reorder): the browser-based tool is unlimited and nothing is uploaded.
- Need to edit the text inside a PDF: both can. Sejda has done it for years; we have real text editing too.
- A heavy job a few times a year: Sejda's $5 week pass is probably the cheapest route — we have no such option.
- Want a desktop application: Sejda has one, we do not.
- Processing many documents regularly: compare the monthly cost — Sejda Web is $7.50, PDF Platform Plus is $6.99.
So this is not a «which is better» question. Sejda offers a strong server-side toolkit with flexible ways to pay. We take page operations off the server entirely, which removes the limit on them. Pick whichever matches what you actually do.
